Tanzania is one of the larger countries in Africa which combines a long coastline on to the Indian Ocean in the east of the country along with a significant inland portion which is home to several mountainous and savannah regions. The country has long been popular among visitors to the country, with Ernest Hemingway being one of the most famous advocates and visitors to this lovely country.
The Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is a part of Africa that is home to some of the most remarkable animals and natural sights in the world, with this large plain also flowing into Kenya where the region is referred to as the Masai Mara. The park itself is one of the most important tourist attractions in Tanzania, with thousands of people coming every year to enjoy a safari in the Serengeti.
One of the great attractions for visitors to the Serengeti National Park is that it is possible to see some of the most dramatic animals, including the five main animals to see on safari, namely lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and buffalo. While visitors do have to remain in Tanzania, animals do not pay attention to international borders, and the migration of around a million wildebeest over into Kenya is one of the most stunning sights in the world, with the plains becoming a rolling sea of animal flesh.
The Ngorongoro Crater
This crater is the legacy of a huge volcano which collapsed leaving a large crater with steep sides that have helped this region to develop a very distinctive natural ecosystem. The crater itself is fairly close to the Serengeti, and is on the route of the massive zebra and wildebeest migration. The steep sides of the crater have helped to keep many of the animals in this region over the years, and the Ngorongoro Crater has a population of lions, buffalo and the black rhinoceros.
The Olduvai Gorge within the crater is one of the most important sites in the world in terms of human and primate history, with several of the evolutionary predecessors of humans having lived in this area. There is a small museum which has some of the stone tools and fossils that are thought to be up to two million years old.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Close to the northern border of Tanzania is the largest mountain in Africa, and as it rises from the plain thousands of meters below, Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free standing mountain in the world. This is one of the most popular places to visit in Africa, and there are thousands of people who come to Tanzania every year to enjoy the opportunity of trying to hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The reduction in the snow and ice cover at the highest part of the mountain has made it significantly easier to climb to the peak, which is 5,895 meters above sea level.
Mikumi National Park
The Mikumi National Park is one of the less developed parks in terms of the numbers of tourists and facilities in the area, but it is well worth visiting. One of the most fascinating aspects of this park is that the lionesses in this part of Tanzania have learned to climb trees, which is a behaviour that isn’t exhibited elsewhere in the country. The park is also home to many of the popular animals to spot on safari, including giraffes, elephants, zebras and buffalo.
